Black Powder For Dummies
Capt. George Baylor, SASS #24287
The advent of simple to use black powder
substitutes has assisted in an explosion in the numbers of shooters
in the black powder categories,
but a lot of potential black powder shooters
are scared off by tales of complicated loading and cleaning of black
powder firearms. Captain
Baylor explores the available black powder
substitutes and simple ways to use them successfully, including simple
loading techniques for rifle,
pistol, shotgun, and percussion pistols,
and some quick and easy methods for cleaning guns after using the substitutes.
For those who want to
use “real” black powder, he discusses simple procedures
for using Goex Cowboy, a black powder designed
for Cowboy Action Shooting. He discusses the “store bought” ammunition
available. He shows which of the substitutes is hottest, and which gives
the most
accuracy. He describes an easy method for
the care and feeding of percussion pistols, and he has several suggestions
for making your percussion pistols
as reliable as cartridge pistols. Too many
shooters are discouraged from shooting in the black powder categories
by the necromancy thought
to be required to use real black powder and
the difficulty of getting it in several areas of the country due to
local regulations. Captain
Baylor shows how to make it easy. |

Advanced
Stage Writing Chuckaroo,
SASS #13080
Good stage design can make or break
a match. Safety, timing, flow, target
placement, shooting sequences, and
the Cowboy “fun factor”
can be controlled, and you can be
a hero.
Safety can be controlled by appropriate
stage design, transferring the stage
writer’s “intent”
to paper, controlling the time of
a stage, for balance between other
stages, how to avoid posse questions
after the stage has been presented,
keeping the shooting order simple,
a target matrix to give you un-repeated
sequences for over two years, category
friendly stages, shotgun target placement
for different shotgun types, use
of props, make it spotter friendly,
keep it cowboy, use of movement,
the flow of the stage, use of targets,
target choices, pitfalls, and the
do’s and don’ts. |
