In addition to the exhibition hall, the SASS Convention provides a daily schedule of educational seminars, guest speakers and entertainment.
 
Seminars are conducted by experts in the various areas of the sport and many of the most recognized competitors in the game. From top shooters and gunsmiths to leather makers and reloading professionals to clothing designers, the SASS Convention has it all.
 
Your Conventioneer entry includes one free $10 seminar per day. You must be a SASS Member and a Conventioneer to attend Seminars. Free seminars the shooting competition, Expert Series or RO II Course.

One of the authors for the celebrated Guns & Ammo Book "Guns of the Gunfighters" was Jim Dunham (Kid Rio, SASS # 2741). He wrote the articles on "Wild Bill" Hickok and "Six-Gun Trickery". This session will examine the way famous Old West shootists behaved under fire in famous shootouts. From Hickok's fight with Dave Tutt to the Earps in Tombstone to Commodore Perry Owens in Holbrook we will take a look at "Men with the Bark on."
1003 Making Fashion Plate Come To Life

Have you ever looked at a photograph or fashion plate from the Victorian Era and wondered how you could make a dress like that? Or maybe you’ve seen ladies in dresses that looked like they just stepped out of the pages of a Victorian magazine and wondered how they did it? In this class, you’ll learn the basics needed to accomplish this from the correct foundation garments to the fabulous accessories. You’ll learn how to distinguish the different fashion periods of the time and find the one that’s right for you. In addition, we’ll show you how to make a dress right from a fashion plate with a simple pattern modification and how to reproduce an antique dress that will make you the talk of the town!

Join us for an overview of SASS Mounted Shooting, its guidelines, and the mounted shooters’ rulebook. We will explain the equipment needed for the mounted shooter and their horse, discuss mounted shooting stage design, and give you techniques and practice methods to try at home. We will also emphasize the SAFETY aspects of the sport of mounted shooting and give you tips on starting a Mounted Shooting Club, developing a club model; theory of recruiting, practice, mentoring, and competing.

1010 Black Powder For Dummies

The advent of simple to use black powder substitutes has assisted in an explosion in the numbers of shooters in the black powder categories, but a lot of potential black powder shooters are scared off by tales of complicated loading and cleaning of black powder firearms. Captain Baylor explores the available black powder substitutes and simple ways to use them successfully, including simple loading techniques for rifle, pistol, shotgun, and percussion pistols, and some quick and easy methods for cleaning guns after using the substitutes. For those who want to use “real” black powder, he discusses simple procedures for using Goex Cowboy, a black powder designed for Cowboy Action Shooting. He discusses the “store bought” ammunition available. He shows which of the substitutes is hottest, and which gives the most accuracy. He describes an easy method for the care and feeding of percussion pistols, and he has several suggestions for making your percussion pistols as reliable as cartridge pistols. Too many shooters are discouraged from shooting in the black powder categories by the necromancy thought to be required to use real black powder and the difficulty of getting it in several areas of the country due to local regulations. Captain Baylor shows how to make it easy.

Both evening and day fashions will be highlighted, as well as hair styles, undergarments, hats, and other accessories unique to this era. If this is an era you’d like to portray, this seminar will show you how to create the look whether you sew for yourself, shop online, or have a favorite seamstress.

CD Tom is the creator of the SASS Premier Scoring & Match Management program. He will demonstrate the major features of the program including how to extract mail merges for name and address labels, confirmation letters, and ribbon labels, How to create your own specialized match certificates by merging category winners into templates. How to track many different criteria, such as: dinner tickets and gun cart rentals. The Vendor registration module includes space management and tracking of payments and sponsorship fees. This module also prints vendor badges and dinner tickets for vendor and attendees. The Match Management & Scoring System is capable of scoring by rank points, total time or category total time just by selecting the check box you want. You can easily switch between different types of scoring and recalculate to see the differences. You’re also able to track misses, penalties and bonuses so shooters can track their progress. The program provides information on the overall misses and penalties for each stage. You can print your match results for mailing to shooters or you can print the results to a .rtf file that can be attached to an e-mail.

You’ll be shown the finishing techniques used to complete the dress form and mount it so that it is free standing so that you can get the perfect fit for you!

Learn why certain ammunition works better then others in this model shotgun, what type and length of ammo to use. Why is LOP (Length of Pull) and AOA (Angle of Attack of the butt stock) so important. Using 19th century photographs, paintings, and catalogs Captain Baylor explores how cowboys, lawmen, and outlaws actually dressed as opposed to how the movies thought they dressed. Since real cowboys rode all day while SASS Cowboys run 10 yard dashes with guns and walk a lot. Captain Baylor explores comfort and practicality as well as authenticity. Some myths will be shattered, others proven to be true. Various accoutrements will be put into their proper time period so you can look like a cowboy of 1875 or a banker of 1890. Over 200 photographs and drawings are used to demonstrate every facet of 19th Century men’s western clothing with practical suggestions for making your shooting costume authentic and comfortable.

Good stage design can make or break a match. Safety, timing, flow, target placement, shooting sequences, and the Cowboy “fun factor” can be controlled, and you can be a hero.
Safety can be controlled by appropriate stage design, transferring the stage writer’s “intent” to paper, controlling the time of a stage, for balance between other stages, how to avoid posse questions after the stage has been presented, keeping the shooting order simple, a target matrix to give you un-repeated sequences for over two years, category friendly stages, shotgun target placement for different shotgun types, use of props, make it spotter friendly, keep it cowboy, use of movement, the flow of the stage, use of targets, target choices, pitfalls, and the do’s and don’ts.
